Ogden Newspapers announces possible sale of paper
Ogden Newspapers announced in June that it is “exploring options” for a possible sale of Maui Publishing.
“We are proud of the work that has been done in Maui. Since 2000, the newspaper has successfully transitioned into a modern, multimedia news outlet and is a credit to the local staff,” said Cameron Williams, chief revenue officer of Ogden Newspapers, in a statement. “However, if the time has come for the next chapter, we are willing to consider options to make that happen.”
Dozens of local businesses in recent weeks have posted signs in support of union workers at The Maui News, calling on the company to “invest or sell locally.” The Pacific Media Workers Guild commends this decision by Ogden Newspapers, and is eager to work with new owners dedicated to supporting local journalism.
The community is also voicing its support. In a letter to the editor published July 7, 2023, Haiku resident Dave DeLeon writes if workers at The Maui News are to “give us the news of Maui we need, then the paper’s editorial staff is going to have to grow.”
“It has to be big enough to truly cover our amazing community,” wrote DeLeon. “That will only happen if we — the Maui community — invest in The Maui News.”
